We have always felt that activities should be both fun and instructional. The program of Brookwoods and Deer Run emphasizes activities that are educational and exciting; proving beyond any doubt that learning can be fun.
The following is a list of typical activities offered:
As might be expected, many of our activities are water-related. We are fortunate to have a natural sand beach within a large, protected cove where most of our water activities take place. Competent WSI (Water Safety Instructor) staff members occurs within our designated swim area, while sailing, canoeing, skiing, and playaking are extended throughout the large cove area.
In addition to our skill-based activities, every cabin goes on a day or overnight hike. In keeping with our concept of wilderness living, campers continue to carry their own equipment, including food and personal gear. Lightweight packs and frames are used, and there’s always adequate food for extended trips. We respect any individual’s health restrictions while encouraging all campers to participate in our outdoor program to the best of their ability. Although many of the older campers find longer and more demanding trips to their liking, not all of our trips are rugged expeditions. We also feature informal camp outs on our private island or at our treehouse to introduce young campers to the excitement of camping without ever having to leave camp property. In the event of wet weather, our camping equipment permits us to carry on with little inconvenience.
